Sonny Colbrelli took 6th place at Stage 2 of Tour de France
Tour de France 2017.
DÜSSELDORF – LIÉGE – 203,5 km / Stage 2
Liége, Belgium, July 2nd – Sonny Colbrelli proved again, that he is a top sprinter.
The second stage of Tour de France started today in Düsseldorf, Germany, on wet roads and in heavy rain. It was a flat stage with an early breakaway of 4 riders that kept the break of maximum 3 minutes right up to last kilometres.
Today’s stage was described as the battle for sprinters so everyone was waiting for the last kilometres and a long sprint in Liége.
BAHRAIN MERIDA Team’s main strategy for the race was to bring Sonny Colbrelli in the best possible place for his sprint and with hard work the team succeeded. In the last two kilometres, Sonny Colbrelli was in front all the time. Finally he decided to push harder and provoked the final sprint along with Peter Sagan (BOH). In the last 20 meters, another group of sprinters started their sprint finish. Sonny took an excellent 6th place and finished the race in company with some famous sprinters.
Sonny showed once again that he has every right to chase the sprinter podiums at Tour de France this year. Marcel Kittel (QST) took today’s victory, ahead of Arnaud Démare (FDJ) and André Greipel (LTS).
Sonny Colbrelli commented after the race: »I started the sprint too early, but it was the only way to try to beat such sprinters in this kind of finish. Anyway, It’s important that I was there with them to compete for the stage win. The Tour has just started and tomorrow’s stage suits me. I feel good and the team is ready to support me. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow. It will be a pretty nice stage.«
