Sonny 5th in stage 3 of Dubai Tour, great work by the team
Fujairah, February 8th, 2018 – The 3rd stage of Dubai Tour had some hills, but it was the wind that affected riders rather then the hills. It was a perfect day in Dubai for the start, but the more we moved towards the desert the more the wind was picking up. A few breakaways attempted in the first few kilometers, but it was around km100 that the wind split the peloton in two echelons, yet that didn’t last long and it was again up to the sprinter’s teams to fight for positions on the arrival at Fujairah. Our Team BAHRAIN MERIDA riders, just like in the first two stages, were always in top third of the peloton and they entered 2km leading the group, perfectly positioning Sonny Colbrelli for the final sprint. Sonny was leading just 20-30 meters to the finish line but ended up placing 5th, which is the best result in the past 3 days.
Gorazd Štangelj, our Sports Director: “The team did a perfect job until the end and Sonny was in the top 2, with 20m to go. With this wind you need to be perfect, otherwise if you start too early or too late the wind can punish you and that happened to Sonny. Nevertheless, we are satisfied, as we did a good job from the stage 1. We see that the team is working very well together, the sprints are crazy every day, and you also need some luck to win a stage. Tomorrow is a little better stage for us with a hard finish, but this is good for the moral for tomorrow.”
