Siutsou sprints to 6th in Cagliari

Cagliari, May 7th – In the very windy, short and flat stage from Tortolì to Cagliari (148 km) the Belarusian National Champion finished in the first small group, taking 6th and now he is 5th in the overall.

“Everybody knows that we’re here only for our captain” says Kanstantsin Siustou after the finish “Too bad that he couldn’t stay with me when the group split. Of course I would have preferred that he was with me. After the roundabout I found the fourth position. It was not easy to stay with such a strong sprinters”.

A flat finale awaited the peloton in Cagliari for the last of the three stages of the 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia in Sardinia. But the wind that blew all day long and the crosswinds in the finale, changed the scenery, as Sports Director Paolo Slongo explains: “It was a very nervous stage, because of the wind during all the day. So we spent a lot of energy in order to stay in the front of the race. We knew that with 15 km to go there was a change of direction and crosswind were expected and we need to be very careful. At that point, indeed the wind blow the peloton to pieces. Siutsou was in the front positions and nearly Nibali could be there too. Anyway he stayed together with the GC men, except for Jungels, but just for few seconds.

We must consider this stage positively, because sometimes in stage like this, a puncture or a mechanical problem can compromise the whole Giro”.

Fernando Gaviria takes the sprint in Cagliari ahead of Selig and Nizzolo. The Colombian is the new Pink Jersey.
