Rik Verbrugghe will join BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team as Sports Director
Wednesday, 13th September 2017 – Experienced Team Director and former Belgian pro cyclist, Rik Verbrugghe, has signed to be one of the Sports Directors in BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team in season 2018.
Rik Verbrugghe, born 1974 in Belgium, became a professional road racing cyclist in 1996. During his pro career, he become a Belgian time trial champion, competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics, won a stage at the Tour de France, three stages at the Giro d’Italia, and the one-day Ardennes classics—La Flèche Wallonne, and the overall and two stages of the Critérium International. His remarkable accomplishments were the result of his hard work and passion for cycling that stayed with him even after his retirement as a professional rider. In 2008 he announced his retirement but stayed tightly connected to the world of cycling. He was the team director at Quick Step during the 2009 and 2010 seasons and in 2011 he became team director at BMC Racing Team until 2014. In 2015 was the sport manager from IAM cycling until last year when the team stop end 2016. But in 2017 Rik work for the RTBF Belgian television as commentator during the classics and Tour de France.
BAHRAIN MERIDA is looking forward to have such an experienced and professional sports director joining the team. He will significantly contribute to our team and play a major role in preparing strategies and tactics for the races in 2018.

Rik is an important asset to us, not only at the races working with the riders and staff but also in the organization of various areas of the team where his vast experience will be valued. His years spent as a rider as well as a sports director and manager is something respected by all as well as Rik’s many different languages he speaks will bring an even more international feel to the team which we believe is an important topic. We welcome him and looking forward to starting a new and exciting season together.”
After signing the contract Rik Verbrugghe commented: “I’m very proud to work with an ambitious and motivated team like BAHRAIN MERIDA next year where I will work with big riders as Nibali, Colbrelli and so on. Looking forward to give my experience to the all team and making the riders goal’s and planning but also giving my experience during the spring classics and Grand Tours.”
