Pozzovivo moves into 5th overall
Qurayyat – Monday 18 February – “I lost a few seconds in the last hundreds of meters – says Domenico Pozzovivo after the finish line – but I’m happy with my race today. I had to recover the gap and I spent a lot of energy, but on the last climb I stayed with the best “.
With today’s fifth place, just 4 seconds behind the winner and race leader Alexey Lutsenko, the Italian rider moves into 5th overall with three stages to go. “It was not a climb suited to my characteristics – again Pozzovivo – and so it was important not to lose precious seconds, on Wednesday on the Green Mountain I will find a more favorable ground”.
The third stage, 192km from Shati Al Qurum to Qurayyat, was characterized by a flight of a dozen runners who had a maximum advantage of about 6 minutes. When the group decided to react, several echelons were formed and Pozzovivo found himself in the third group with a disadvantage, on the first pass under the finish line with 40km to go, around half minute. The pursuers came back and in the final the best tried to win the stage.
“It was a complicated stage – explains DS Alberto Volpi – because the breakaway had an important advantage and the group had to react strongly. We could not get into the first group, but then Pozzovivo recovered and in the final he did a good race. Before the Green Mountain challenge, tomorrow there will be a stage for punchers like our Sonny Colbrelli “.
