Pozzovivo is 5th in the Queen Stage of the Tour of the Alps

Alpe di Pampeago (Trentino, Italy), April 17th – Thrilling final on the brutal ascent to the iconic Alpe di Pampeago (2900 mt altitude), finish of Stage 2 of the Tour of the Alps (Lavarone-Alpe di Pampeago/Fiemme of 145,5km). As expected the overall contenders struggled to go for it and BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team captain Domenico Pozzovivo – who already won on this finish – tried to attack and to take his chances.

“It was the stage that most suited me and I tried to make a difference on the last km. Too bad that my rivals did not hesitate to react and to catch me, otherwise I could have persisted more. But I’m happy with my condition and with the job of my teammates who worked to be at the front on the climb up to the finish” says ‘Pozzo’ who takes 5th place atop Pampeago, that crowns Miguel Angel Lopez (AST), with Pinot (GFC) second and Sosa (ANS) third and new leader of the General Classification (Pozzovivo is 5th with a gap of 19”).

“Our riders did the right team work. Then the climb to Pampeago was really demanding and Domenico thought that Team Sky in particular made a higher tempo. We know that he is not fast as his rivals in this kind of finish, so after the attack of Froome he tried to go solo” explains Sports Director Alberto Volpi “But we can be happy, seen that the day did not start in a good way. Chun-Kai Feng crashed and he was forced to abandon. We are waiting for the official diagnosis, but he probably broke his collarbone”.
