No regrets for Ion after the queen stage

Sion, 28th April 2018 – “I had nothing to lose and so I attacked from afar”. Ion Izagirre, now 11th in the overall, explains today’s race. “I knew that Hermann was in the front and he would help me – continues the Basque rider – and then I started along with two other riders” .

“I reached the last climb with about a minute ahead of the peloton but then the bunch started to recover seconds. When Roglic and Bernal left I could not stay with them and then the descent was too technical and so I could not get back on top five. I’m happy anyway, I know I did my best  “.

On the same line, Sport Director Rik Verbrugghe: “Actually today, we did very well trying to attack before with Hermann and after with Ion – explains – Team Sky did not let them go and with the passing of the kilometers the advantage dropped progressively. At least we tried and I believe we did a good race “.

Thanks to today’s good performance, Hermann Pernsteiner climbed to 14th place overall: “It was really hard to escape on the first climb and so I attacked downhill with some other riders. In the finale, I wait for Ion af then I was in the front to do a good pace. At the end, I think I made a really good race today “.

The Danish Jakob Fuglsang won the queen stage while the Slovenian Primoz kept the yellow jersey leader with a 8” gap from the second the Colombian Egan Bernal.

Tomorrow the fifth and last stage of this Tour de Romandie 2018. From Mont-sur-Rolla to Geneva (181km) without particular difficulties. A stage for the few remaining sprinters but watch out for the day’s attackers.
