Niccoló Bonifazio sprints to 4th place at Stage 2 and Domenico Pozzovivo keeps the 10th place in GC at Giro d’Italia.
Giro d’Italia 2018.
Tel Aviv, May 5th– Stage 2 ; Haifa – Tel Aviv –167 km
At todays’ windy stage the main strategy was to keep Domenico Pozzovivo safe and to launch Niccoló Bonifazio to the best possible position for his sprint. The plan was accomplished in every segment. The tail wind at first 40 km and further on to Tel Aviv, the cross wind of 20 km/h was permanet and TBM riders were beeing in the peloton with hard work and carrying one for each other and exchanging roles for the common goal.
At the entrance of Tel Aviv, and 10 km to the finish all TBMriders took over the front of the bunch and were dictating the tempo and trying to catch the best position for the last kilometers. Of course Lotto Jumbo, Katyusha, and some others were there too. It wasnt easy to keep the speed so hight for long time.
And finally, Bonifazio got to the point where he could be in a competitive position for the sprint until last 400 m where he was just a bit short to catch up with Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) who came from behind with a great sprint performance. Jakub Mareczko (Wilier Triestina) had the earliest jump but Elia Viviani passed him smoothly for an Italian victory at Stage 2 ogf Giro. Jakub Mareczko kept second place and Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) was third.
Niccoló Bonifazio gave all his strenght to keep up in the long sprint and took an excellent 4th place.; “It is a good result for me. I worked hard in the last kilometers until 400 m to go to take a good position. It was a hectic final, but I am very happy for me and my legs. I thank to my teammates for their help and support.”
Rohan Dennis (BMC) took over the GC and Maglia Rosa by taking 3 bonus seconds by beeing the fastest at the second intermediate sprint. Domenico Pozzovivo finished in the peloton and kept the 10th position in GC.
