Last call for sprinters
Last call for sprinters today in Tortona. The thirteenth stage, starting from Reggio Emilia and entirely flat, was most likely one of the last stages that could end with a mass sprint.
And sprint was. With a new success of Colombian Fernando Gaviria, at his fourth victory in this Giro. Tom Dumoulin is still leading GC with our Vincenzo Nibali fifth in the overall standings.
“From tomorrow we are back riding uphill – commented sports director Gorazd Štangelj – and today was the time for the sprinters teams. The upcoming climb of Oropa will be another story. “
“After these two quiet stages – said Kastantsin Siutsou – we are back to “serious things” and we are ready to protect Vincenzo, above all, going up to Oropa.”
The fourteenth stage is very short, only 131 km, and clearly divided into two parts: 120 km very fast-running and 11 km climb with gradient over 7% and peaks topping out at 13% a few kilometers before the finish.
