Ion still in the GC Top Ten after queen stage

Lagos de Covadonga, September 9th 2018 – The three-day summit finish closes with Ion Izagirre 9th in the general classification that always sees Simon Yates in first place. Among the fog of Covadonga the Basque runner arrived 10th with a 1’49” gap from the stage winner the French Tibaut Pinot.

Satisfied Ion Izagirre “I knew it would not be an easy day for me and on the last climb the pace was too high. to keep the best wheels. Together with my teammates we worked well throughout all the stage and in the end I kept my Top Ten “.

Ivan Garcia Cortina was also a protagonist on his Asturian roads, He attacked with others eleven riders and after he went solo and he was caught by a 15-man group with only 8km to go. “I recovered yesterday’s effort well and I tried again. I had no chances to arrive but I wanted to try the same “.

Good race also for Hermann Pernsteiner:”I think today was the hardest stage in this Vuelta so far. On the last climb me and Pellizotti rode a good pace and we gave all what possible to keep our chances upright for the team classification. We kept the first place and now I can rest a bit”.

Tomorrow second and last rest day. The Vuelta will resume Tuesday with the important Individual Time Trial from Santillana del Mar to Torrelavega: a slightly undulating 32km route.

“I made a careful recoon of the route – again Ion – and it is a particular time trial. You can make speed but there is also a short climb of about 2km where you need to have strength. It’s a path that I like”.
