Ion passes Camperona test

  |   Press

La Camperona, September 7th 2018 – “I’m happy to have received the award as the most combative rider of today stage – says Gorka Izagirre – it was a very hard race and I was a bit tired in the finale. I knew that the last ascent was very hard so I decided to climb with a regular pace”.

“When on the team radio they told me that Ion was losing positions – again Gorka – I thought about helping my brother. I would not have won anyway and instead Ion did not lose much”.

Ion Izagirre: “As was to be expected, on the Camperona everyone went full gas and in the end I lost something but I gave 100%. I do not think I can give much more on such an explosive climb and so I can Say I’m happy with my race. The next two stages are also very demanding and I have to think about recovering as well as possible “.

The general classification always sees leader Jesus Herrada with Ion 7th with a 2’35 “gap from the Spaniard rider.

Sport Director Gorazd Štangelj: “It was important to have one of us on the breakaway for both the team classification – in which we are always in first place – and to have a man in the final that could help Ion. He did well even if he lost a few seconds in the last two kilometers, but it was certainly not a climb suited to his characteristics”.

A lot of climb also in the 14th stage from Cistierna to Les Praeres (171km). There are three ascents of the first category to be overcome including the arrival of the Alto Les Praeres: only 4km but with an average gradient of 12.5% and a maximum of 17%. An authentic wall.
