Torrelavega, September 11th 2018 – Ion Izagirre makes a position in the overall after a time trial for the strong and prepared athletes. The Basque rider’s gap is now 3’04″ behind the race leader, the British Simon Yates, who has kept the red jersey without any problems.

“I had good feelings and even the final time was fair. It went well and I gained a position in the standings that is good for morale. Tomorrow is the home stage and it will be really hard and after 16 days of competition even more! I tried the climb and someone can make the difference, it will also depend on how ITT recovers today “.

Hermann Pernsteiner: “For me it was a good time trial. I started a little bit easier and after I found my peace and I pushed more. I’m very satisfied with my ranking,  I’m 19th, but for sure in the last stages the priority will be help Ion to get in the Top Five”.

Sport Director Gorazd Štangelj: “Follow Ion by car is always a pleasure because he is a real specialist. He studies the route, is technically prepared, starts and always arrives strong. In short, he knows how to manage his race very well”.

“I’m happy with his result – still the SD – I did not expect so much difference between the best men in the standings and it went like this. We are at the third week and the effort is felt more and more, but Ion still seems strong and motivated “.

Tomorrow the 17th stage starts from the Basque Country and has already many climbs. From Getxo to Balcón de Bizkaia (157km) with different ascents of second and third category but above all the final ascent of just over 7km but with gradient that reach 24%. A real first-class climb!
