La Covadilla, 2nd September 2018 – “I was looking for answers and I found them”. Ion Izagirre finished in 8th place at the end of the second mountain stage of La Vuelta. “Today was an important day – says the Basque rider – and even today we have been ahead with the GC best riders”.

“When Miguel Angel Lopez and Nairo Quintana attacked, with only 2km to go – still Ion – I followed them without problem and only in the last 500 meters I lost a few seconds. After nine stages, I can say that I am happy with my performance”.

Ion has gained two overall positions and is now 5th with only 17” gap from the new race leader the British Simon Yates.

Gorka Izagirre spent all day near his brother Ion: “It was a real stage; a stage with a lot of climbs with a very hot weather. I wanted to help Ion as much as possible and that’s why I renounced to try the break and I chose to stay close to him. The whole team worked well and climbing towards La Covadilla we tried to stay always in the first positions but sheltered from the strong headwind “.

Sport Director Gorazd Štangelj: “All in all, we did a good race even if we had to enter the day breakaway so we could play the stage victory. Ion went very well and at the moment we are in line with those that are our goals “

Tomorrow, first rest day. The Vuelta will come back Tuesday with the 10th stage from Salamanca to Fermoselle (177km) with a flat route.
