Good sprint finish for Izagirre in Bern

  |   Press

Bern, June 12th – Ion Izagirre faced very well the difficult finale of Stage 3 in Bern, taking 13th place in the sprint won by Matthews, new leader of the race. With his outstanding performance Izagirre seized the top ten of the general classification.

Stage 3 at the Tour de Suisse was pointed out to be a sprinter stage, but it showed to be not easy at all for the fast wheels. The last 5 km were indeed pretty hard with cobbles streets, many roundabouts and bunches. Above all a 900m at 6.7% climb with 1.5 km to go. Enough to made the race really demanding.

In the finishing straight the best team to manage the sprint turned out to be the one of Michael Matthews who out sprinted the World Champion Peter Sagan. Ion Izagirre was able to stay in this first group, sprinting to 13th. A good result, that made him seized the top ten of the GC, where he is now 9th (+25”).

It was difficult, above all the last km, because of the passage through the town and the uphill. But thanks to the great job of my team, I could take a good position in front of the first group. It was important to be there in the final climb. We’re happy”.

Speaking just after the finish, Sports Directors Harald Morscher is happy too, for Ion’s performance: “Very good. I was sure that he can finish in front position. He already seized the top ten of the general classification and we’re very happy with this. On the other hand Bonifazio could be there contesting the sprint too, but the finale was really hard. Too bad for him. Now he has to clench the teeth during the next mountain stages until Saturday, where I think he can do well, as in Gippingen. He showed to be in a good form and I hope that he can survive the climbs to take a good result for him and for the team”.
