Hermann Pernsteiner 2nd in Fujisan stage, 2nd in GC
Fujisan, Friday 25th May – As a signature stage of TOJ, race official made it a longer challenge than usual with 2 laps circuit course for warming up before climbing up to 2,000m finish. With the maximum gradient up to 22%, It is surely the decisive day in general classification.
It was Hermann Pernsteiner who proved himself to be the best in the squad, he placed 2nd today, 28 seconds behind stage winner Marcos García Fernández(Kinan Cycling Team). Our Austrian climbing specialist is now 2nd in GC, 39 seconds behind Marcos. Grega Bole still leads 2 points ahead of Marco Canola(Nippo–Vini Fantini–Europa Ovini) in points classification.
“The goal was to win, but in the end it was this guy who went early on the climb. The plan was to wait a little bit longer, but when 5k to go, I have to try and I pushed all the way up, I came close, but it was not possible to catch him. He was really strong. I gave everything, but in the end it is 2nd place,” says Hermann after Fujisan stage.
Commented by our sport director Harald Morscher. “It was quite tricky to analyze the day before who is the best in this climb, so we decided to be calm at the beginning. As we saw during the race, the climb is really hard and steep. Marcos García Fernández escaped from the beginning of the climb, and came up with a couple of seconds advantage. Hermann did a good job, he closed the gap from 1’20” to 28”, but for Hermann it was 1km short to catch him, that is racing. Tomorrow is another day, we will try to take over GC.”
