Hard race on 2nd day in Belgium

  |   Press

Kuurne, Belgium, February 26th – 200,5 km long 69th edition of Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne race proved a tough one for BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team today, but the race was a valuable experience, especially for the young riders.

It was partially cloudy day, with a few rainshowers and not much wind. The roads were relatively dry, but the Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne race proved to be a hard one for our riders. Despite the yesterday’s crash the team spirit was great before the race and everyone expected a good day. Luka Pibernik was the only rider that couldn’t compete today, due to yesterday’s crash.

The race started in good tempo, with few movements and breakaways up to 130 km. From the beginning of the race, all of our riders did their best and tried very hard, but unfortunately today’s race proved to be a tough challenge. Sonny Colbrelli and Borut Božič finished the race in the peloton, Ivan Cortina and David Per a little behind the group.

Sports director Tristan Hoffman explained after the race: “I guess today was a really tough race. Although many riders came to the finish – that’s the good part. Sonny Colbrelli and Borut Božič were in the peloton and in one moment they came really close to the breakaway group. If we could catch them that would mean we could sprint to 7th place. But unfortunately no results today for us. Either way – it was a valuable racing experience in Belgium. Especially for the young riders – it was a good experience this weekend.”

Borut Božič commented: “Yesterday was hard, but also today was hard. We tried to be focused, but unfortunately we didn’t catch the breakaway. But that’s how it is. We didn’t race bad, but we could do better. It was a good experience for young riders and I think they learned a lot from today. Next time we will try to do better.”

Sonny Colbrelli also added that it was a tough race today and that he would like to thank his teammates for all the support, but that today apparently wasn’t their day.
