Great teamwork of Bahrain-Merida, white jersey 3 days in a row
Inabe, 23rd May – Started from Ageki Station, riders were once again on the circuit course to Bairin Park with 14.8 km x 8 laps, total 127 km course in Mie prefecture. The steep and narrow opening km in the circuit (maximum 17%) could be a great chance for breakaway.
It turned out to be a chaos at the very beginning, while teams were eager to send their riders in the breakaway. In the middle of the race, there were 3 in the break, and riders from Team Bahrain-Merida were at the front controlling the pace of the peloton.
In the final 4 kilometers, riders were all brought back to the peloton, our leader of white jersey owner Iván García Cortina was guarded safe and sound until the finish, he sprinted 6th on the uphill finish. Another impressive performance for our 21-year-old sprinter, he is now back to the 3rd place in general classification.
Both Per and Feng were once in the breakaway, and all our riders were working strongly and actively for Cortina. Asked of our plan in the near future, our sports director Tristan Hoffman commented: “We tried to go in the breakaway, we tried to help Ivan win the stage, and we still have Domen, he’s here for GC, he can climb good, let’s hope that he can make a top 10 here, that would be nice!”
