Gorka in the Top Ten after the prologue

  |   Press

Fribourg, 24th April 2018 – Gorka Izagirre closed 10th in the opening prologue of the Tour de Romandie. The Basque rider finished with a 9 “ gap from the race winner and the first race leader of the Australian Michael Matthews.

“I did a good time trial – says Gorka – and I hardly expected it. I knew I had a good condition but I did not know how good it was. And today I discovered I was really competitive “.

“It was a very technical time trial – explains Enrico Gasparotto – with a couple of dangerous corners and a descent in which the 80km / h was overcome. The last kilometer was really challenging because of steep climb (maximum slope 15%) and the 500 meters with cobbles “.

Ion Izagirre was 15” behind the winner:”I’m happy with my race – he says – but I think I can improve again. I still lack a little confidence with the curves after the fall at the Tour de France. I have to brake less! “.

Also satisfied the Sport Director Rik Verbrugghe: “The Izagirre brothers have made the race that we imagined, but also the others have gone well. Tomorrow the first climbs start and we will try to do well with our two strong finisseur Sonny Colbrelli and Enrico”.

Tomorrow first stage from Fribourg to Delèmont (166km) with three second-category climbs the last of which, Le Sommet (6km, 6.4%), ends with only 18km to go.
