Valencia, Sunday, 4th February 2018 – 69th edition of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana

Today was the final and fifth stage of Valenciana, leading from Paterna to Valencia (135 km). The shortest stage of Volta was a fast one, on wet roads with rain showers in the first half.

Domen Lojz Novak, our young rider, performed excellently today and rode in a breakaway group for 90 kilometers. He proved how well he prepared at the training camp and throughout the preparation period. Giovanni Visconti, BAHRAIN MERIDA Team’s captain at Volta Valenciana, was supported by all the other TBM riders and was in the front of the chasing group up to the entrance to Valencia, when the sprinters took the main role.

Jurgen Roelandts (BMC Racing Team) jumped into the best position for the sprint at the last roundabouts and corners, while Danny Van Poppel (LottoNL-Jumbo) got close to him but couldn’t take the victory. Third place went to Clement Venturini (AG2R La Mondiale).

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) is an overall winner of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana 2018. He expressed his satisfaction with the fact that he recovered so well after the injury he had at the last TDF. He showed again that the early phase of the season is reserved for his victories.

Our sports directors, Verbrugghe and Morscher, were satisfied with the performance of BAHRAIN MERIDA riders and their approach to Volta Valenciana. They also confirmed that the two weeks training camp in Calpe were very successful.

Giovanni Visconti concluded: »We came to the Valenciana after two training weeks at Calpe, where we worked as hard as here at the race. The team performed very well and I achieved some good results too. So I’m very happy and motivated for the upcoming races.«
