Albuixech, Thursday, 1st February 2018 – 2nd stage of the 69th edition of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana started in Bétera. The stage was 153,9 km long with five climbs, three of them a 3rd category and Eslida (79 km) and Garbi (123,2 km) 1st category.

The briefing before today’s stage was to work together for Giovanni Visconti, our GC and Team’s captain at Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana.

Ramunas Navardauskas kept his eyes on Giovanni most of the time, keeping him safe. Team SKY was dictating the rhythm most of the time and keeping a block in front of the bunch. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Astana duo, Fuglsang and Sanches ran away at Garbi, the hardest climb (1st cat.), at their favored place to make the difference, which they managed to keep till the very finish. Giovanni Visconti was in the chasing group together with Domen Novak and Hermann Pernsteiner, two young BAHRAIN MERIDA riders that finished today’s race with a small distance from a chasing group.

The runaway trio, Valverde, Fuglsang and Sanchez, managed to keep the gap for the podium positions but also our Giovanni Visconti sprinted past the chasing group and took an excellent 4th place in Albuixech.

Giovanni Visconti commented after the race: »I am very happy. It was the first hard stage for us where we had the chance to try our legs after the last training camp. The team was great and 4th place today is a good position for the rest of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana.«

Tomorrow’s 3rd stage at VCV is a team time-trial and all BAHRAIN MERIDA riders are looking forward to a good performance and giving support to Giovanni Visconti.
