First WorldTour podium for Ion Izaguirre with BAHRAIN MERIDA
Eibar, 8th April – Today’s Individual Time Trial was an excellent conclusion of BAHRAIN MERIDA performance in the memorable Tour of the Basque Country. Ion Izaguirre finished 3rd in today’s stage and came 3rd in General Individual Classification. A great performance of BAHRAIN MERIDA Team during the whole past week led to their 1st place in the General Team Classification.
Today’s stage was a great conclusion of the race for BAHRAIN MERIDA Team. Riders had to compete in 27.7 km long Individual Time Trial. Because of an early climb, riders needed to warm up well as they started toward Elgeta. After fast descending with almost 100km/h in direction Bergara, they turned to Osintxu and went to Eibar again, to Untzaga square, completing a circuit that really fits time trial specialists if they do not waste too much energy in the first climb. With an early climb, a tricky descent and a flat second half, the ITT was suited to those with a truly well-rounded skill set.
Ion Izaguirre proved once again how much strength he has and what it means to be a true fighter. He took 3rd place today, only 0:15 sec behind the winner, and with that secured 3rd place in Individual General Classification, 0:21 sec behind Valverde (Movistar) and 0:4 sec behind Contador (Trek-Segafredo). It was a Spanish podium today in Eibar, which local fans loudly celebrated also with a special local dance under the stage.
Visibly relieved and satisfied sports director Philippe Mauduit commented today’s last stage with following words: “It was a great day for BAHRIN MERIDA Team. Ion did a strong performance again today. The whole team was great during the whole week. The cherry on the top is that the boys won the General Team Classification. We are very happy about the performance of BAHRAIN MERIDA Team this week. It was a good Tour of PaÍs Basque.”
