First climb challenges at Tour de France

  |   Press

Tour de France 2017.

VITTEL – LA PLANCHE DES BELLES FILLES – 160,5 km / Stage 5

La Planche des Belles Filles, France, July 5th

Today was the first stage on which the peloton had to chase the breakaway group up to the hard Haute Saone climb, where Vincenzo Nibali took the stage victory at Tour de France 2014.

Soon after the start in Vittel, a group of seven riders went into a comfortable breakaway. TBM rider Tsgabu Grmay showed motivation to go with this group but after a while, riding in the middle zone between the breakaway group and the peloton, Grmay went back again to the bunch.

Team SKY, Astana, and BMC were mostly dominant throughout today’s stage and soon after the breakaway riders were caught, Fabio Aru (AST) decided to go solo. With this victory, Fabio Aru, the Italian champion, definitely joins the main favourites for Maillot Jaume at Tour de France 2017.

Jani Brajkovič, Ondrej Cink, Tsgabu Grmay, Javier Moreno and other TBM riders played their role on today’s stage well and Jani said that it is a shame that BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team lost Ion Izagirre so suddenly and too soon, on the first stage. Jani added that today’s stage would be an ideal one for Ion Izagirre.
