Double punch with Ion Izagirre and Domenico Pozzovivo as leaders for Abu Dhabi Tour

  |   Press

Abu Dhabi, February 19th, 2018 – In the 4th edition of Abu Dhabi Tour we will see 5 stages, one more then previous 3 years. Apart for opening 3 flat stages, and one mountain finish for the last stage, this year offers us an individual time trial on the penultimate stage. With such a variety of stages, many teams are sending GC riders to compete for the overall win. Same is the case with us.

“Our GC leaders will be Ion Izagirre and Domenico Pozzovivo. Domenico just came from the 15 day high altitude training, so we’ll see how he adapts. Also we’ll be ambitious to go for the win in all the stages, with Bonifazio going for sprints, Izagirre and Navardauskas challenging ITT and our GC riders aiming to be up front in the mountain stage. All other riders should be offensive and helping our leader for the day.” – our Sports Director Rik Verbrugghe was straight forward.

Our leaders will be challenged by Tom Dumoulin and Fabio Aru who are starting in Abu Dhabi preparation for Giro d’Italia. Fabio Aru will be highly motivated as he recently joined the home team of this race – UAE Team Emirates. Alejandro Valverde should be considered favourite in any race, specially coming from the win of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana earlier this month, and Rui Costa comes back as last year’s winner. The list of favourites doesn’t stop here, we should mention the likes of Wilco Kalderman, Ilnur Zakarin, Miguel Angel Lopez and Rafal Majka.
