Domenico Pozzovivo took 5th place at the Etna stage and climbed to 4th in overall
Etna, May 10th– Stage 6 ; Caltanissetta – Etna –164 km
The 16 9 m stage from Caltanissetta to the Etna was the first mountain stage of Giro 101, facing to the Osservatorio Astrofisico climb for the first time in history with total elevation of 2.800 m.
The real climb fight started from Paternò(130km) and the final 15 km «lava climb» began in Regalna with up to16% gradient where the narrow road lead through the lava surrounding at the last 5.5 km.
Esteban Chaves (Michelton-Scott) was in the break from the early phase of the stage and he worked it out and all to the finish to take such a clean vicotry. His teammate Simon Yates took the GC lead from the chace from the peloton. A double victory went to the Mitchelton-Scott Team.
TBM leader, Domenico Pozzovivo at the end took the 5th place at todays’ stage jumped up to 4th place in the overall with 43 seconds behind new Maglia Rosa leader Simon Yates.
Domenico Pozzovivo said shortly after the race;
«It was a very difficult day. I thought that many of the other teams played good tactics today and that made it really tough. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to maintain this good form throughout the rest of the Giro d’Italia. I also think that we are all a bit worn out from these Sicilian stages that featured up and down courses. Many of us were not brilliant today. We climbed quite fast, but without making the difference”»
Giovanni Visconti had a crash at with oe of the team cars;
«I had a bad day and crashed at high speed, but I’m just lucky that by hitting a car I didn’t get worse injuries . Domenico did well, so all in all, the day was good for us».
Many would say that the real competition for Maglia Rosa at Giro d’Italia have started today at Etna..
