Domenico Pozzovivo on the royal podium of Zoncolan
Giro d’Italia – Amore infinito
Monte Zoncolan, May 19th– Stage 14; San Vito al Tagliamento – Monte Zoncolan, 186 km
It will be remembered as a legendary stage in the history of the Giro d’Italia and Domenico Pozzovivo is part of it with his third place. Team BAHRAIN MERIDA leader jumps on a royal podium with today’s winner Chris Froome and the Maglia Rosa Simon Yates.
The 186km mountain stage from San Vito al Tagliamento to Monte Zoncolan features Europe’s hardest climb at the finale (10km at an average 12% gradient with peaks topping out at 22%), but before it there were plenty of tough climbs.
There is little room for tactics when the final climb begins, and the riders pass the ‘Benvenuto all’inferno –Welcome to hell’ sign. Despite an expected thousands of fans packing the climb, it was every rider against himself, against his own limit.
“I knew this ascent because I climbed it twice at the Giro. It’s unforgiving” explains Pozzovivo “You have to save power and avoid unnecessary attacks. I tried to keep my pace and accelerate in the final part where in the past I always suffered. I tried to catch the Maglia Rosa too, but he was still powerful as well. All in all I’m satisfied with my third place”.
After today’s stage Team BAHRAIN MERIDA leader jumps to third place overall too, 1’37” down Simon Yates, who retains the Maglia Rosa.
“I think I can compete for this year’s final podium” concludes Domenico “Besides, I don’t want to settle for the third place, but I will fight for a stage win”. Those are the aims of the whole group, that once more showed a great teamwork today.
