Cortina 6th in San Javier

  |   Press

San Javier Mar Menor, 30th August 2018 – Good 6th place for Ivan Garcia Cortina at the end of the tough sprint won by the French Nacer Bouhanni.  Our team leader Ion Izagirre moved to 6th place overall.

Ivan Garcia Cortina: “Certainly better than the other day but the 6th place is not yet my final goal. I would like to do something more. I’m happy that the legs are fine and pity that in the sprint I was a bit closed. We were careful in the final to keep Ion Izagirre in the top positions and to try to make the sprint. “

Luka Pibernik: “Everything as expected. This morning, during the team meeting the sport directors told us to take great care especially in the last 50km and to stay in the front. There were four of us and so we could also help Ivan before the sprint. My condition is growing and even today’s day less hot than the previous ones helped me a little”.

Sport Director Gorazd Štangelj: “Today we were smart and also lucky because we managed to avoid the crash. The guys were careful and we knew that especially in the last 25km there would have been a strong side wind and when the peloton was splintered into a series of echelons both Ion and Vincenzo were in front”.

“Ivan was very clever today – still Štangelj – and his 6th place is good for his and the team’s morale. Ivan deserved the chance to try and win the stage because he has good skills in sprinting and every day and a great help for his teammates. “

The seventh stage will bring the bunch from Puerto Lumbreras to Pozo Alcón. They are 185km of a wavy route with two climbs not particularly demanding. The last 5km, however, are in light but steady climb.
