Colbrelli finished 8th at Italian Championships

  |   Press

Ivrea, June 25th – Sonny Colbrelli was the best placed of Team BAHRAIN MERIDA at the Italian National Road Race Championships (Asti-Ivrea 236 km). He finished 48” behind the solo winner Aru. Good performance of Vincenzo Nibali (12th) who came back to race after a period of rest following the Giro.

The race, called “Gran Piemonte” was held in Piedmont Region today on a demanding course. The four laps of the final circuit of 21.3 km with a 2 km climb (gradient over 10% and peaks of 15%) proved to be decisive to reduce the group. Unfortunately one of the favourite, our Giovanni Visconti, had a bad day and was forced to abandon: “ I had like an heatstroke. I felt very bad, with headache and shivers and it was impossible to continue. I’m sorry because I was really looking forward to this race and my aim was to try to win the Italian title again”. Manuele Boaro, Valerio Agnoli and Antonio Nibali after a good work to help their teammates couldn’t finish the race. With one lap to go, Team BAHRAIN MERIDA fighted for the title with Sonny Colbrelli and Vincenzo Nibali in the front, while Enrico Gasparotto ,who tried to support Visconti, was just behind in the chasing group. Aru attacked in the last climb and maintained the lead of the race until the finish in Ivrea, where Sonny Colbrelli was the first of our riders to come to line, taking the 8th place: “It was a really hard National Championships, both for the high temperatures and because of high pace. Vincenzo helped me, but with such a rivals, all strong climbers, it was impossible to compete. I’m happy for my form, anyway and I’m ready for the Tour de France”.

Good performance for Colbrelli” confirmed Sports Director Paolo SlongoEven more if we think that the course did not suit him and the climbers made the race hard. So we must be happy for his results”. Among the best placed at the Italian Championships there is Vincenzo Nibali too, who took 12th (+1’18”). “We’re surprised that Vincenzo did so well after a period of rest and holidays” continued Slongo “We did not expect that he could be already so competitive in this race, seen that he did not train specifically for it and he focuses on the second part of the season with the Vuelta”.
