Bunch sprint in Marmaris at stage 3

  |   Press

Marmaris, 11th October – Today’s 3rd at Tour of Turkey from Fethyje to Marmaris was 137,2 km long.  A breakaway of seven riders had formed in the opening kilometres. They built a lead of three minutes as they tackled a 2nd category climb in the first hour of racing and then settled in for the flatter to the finale at the promenade by the sea. TBM riders were not in a front group but they stayed in front of the peloton and kept that position the whole race.

The break split in two in the final 25 km but they were all caught at the foot of the final climb, an uncategorised but nevertheless sapping 2.5km incline on a wide highway. There were several splits as the climb turned into a sweeping descent but a sizeable group reformed.

Ivan Cortina who finished 6th today commented after the race: “I have to thank to my team-mates who worked very well today, we were always in the front. I had in my mind that the climb will be hard but it wasn’t so  bad and I felt really good. I was in the top five. After the downhill we enter to cobblestones in the last 5 km. Like every day it was a bit crazy. In the end of the season a lot of riders want to win like me and we go full gas. In the last corner, 300 m to go I was in a good position with a help of Grega and Heino. But the barriers were a bit out and I had to break so I loose maybe five positions and than it was difficult to come in front.”

Ivan Cortina sits at 8th place 26 seconds behind Sam Bennett (BORA – Hansgrohe) in General Classification.
