Brutal day at the Giro: Pozzovivo lost third place overall

Giro d’Italia – Amore infinito

Prato Nevoso, May 25th– Stage 19; Venaria Reale – Bardonechia– 185 km

The 185km stage from Venaria Reale to Bardonecchia was facing the Cima Coppi of this Giro, the highest climb, on the Colle delle Finestre with its gravel roads, before finishing atop the Jafferau in Bardonecchia. It was the penultimate change for the General Classification fighters to try to assault the Maglia Rosa. Yesterday Simon Yates showed signs of weakness and today’s stage reveals that he was really in crisis. But above all today’s brutal stage reveals that the Giro has a new strong leader, Chris Froome.

The British rider attacked with 80km to go on the climb to Colle delle Finestre. Anyone was able to bridge the gap and his attack hurt many, including Team BAHRAIN MERIDA leader Domenico Pozzovivo. Among the GC fighters only Dumoulin, Pinot, Lopez and Carapaz tried to resist, but they came to the finish line with not less than 3 minutes after Froome celebrated his epic solo win in Bardonecchia. Stage win and overall lead of a new general classification, where unfortunately Domenico Pozzovivo sits in the third place anymore. Now he is 6th (+8’03”), coming to the finish 8’27” down the winner.

“Unfortunately I had a bad day” said Pozzovivo after the finish “I paid the anxiety maybe for the first time in this Giro. In a day like this, if you’re not at your best minutes flew. I can be happy to not have had a big crisis. I started to have some difficulties on the Colle delle Finestre, then in the final I felt better. It was really hard also because riders in my group did not collaborate. Froome did something incredible today. In a word unbelievable”
