And then there was sun at Paris Nice Stage 1

  |   Press

Meudon, Sunday 4th March – A rather short (135km), very cold and wet opening stage in the Paris – Nice today where our Gorka Izagirre and Arnaud Démare made a heat in the last meters of the race in sunny Meudon. It was an adrenaline rush in the last 500 mt on the hilly cobblestones path and the photo finish decided the winner. Gorka Izagirre unfortunately lost Stage 1 for 2 mm and qualified 2nd.

»If someone would have predicted this finish in the morning, I would have signed it immediately« said Sports Director Gorazd Štangelj. A bitter-sweet feeling of not having made it first in the end. On the other hand, the Izagirre brothers proved to be very strong today. Ion took his brother to the sprint while Gorka strongly fought the 500m hilly cobblestone road and Ion took his back and finished 10th.

»The weather was a challenge today, it was very cold and wet the whole day. It was raining for the first 100 km and when it finally cleared up a bit the road was wet, slippery and it felt like 2°C. When your body is soaked, and it is so cold your body can’t warm up at all. That is why the sprint was also so tough, « said Heinrich Haussler who was very pleased with the race and the results of his team mates.

Luka Pibernik hardly skipped the big crash some 5km ahead of the finish line. He stopped on time but one of the riders hit him from the back and he fell directly to his wheel and he scratched his face. After the race he feels good and all the team is ready to fight tomorrow again.
