An ambitious squad for the Tour of the Alps
BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team will line up at the upcoming Tour of the Alps – formerly the Giro del Trentino – with the primary aim of refining the preparation ahead of the Giro d’Italia, but with an ambitious squad as well, fighting for the General Classification with Domenico Pozzovivo and goingfor stage wins with Giovanni Visconti.
“It’s a challenging race with hard climbs, that represents a good way to refine the preparation for the Giro. The team is built around Pozzovivo and Visconti, but we want that our young athletes showcase their talent as well: Mark Padun did very well at the Basque Country recently and he can takes his chances” says Alberto Volpi who will be Sports Director together with Harald Morscher at the Euroregional five-stage race, that will start on Monday April 16th from Arco (Trentino, Italy) and will end on Friday 20th in Innsbruck (Tirol, Austria). “The final stage will end on the circuit of the Road World Championships and will be a testing ground for our riders that aim to earn a place on National Team” adds Volpi.
Over 700 km overall distance and 13000 mt overall altitude suit to TBM captain Pozzovivo: “This is the only race that I’ve always attended since I became a pro rider and it has always been the best approach tothe Giro for me. I can test my condition, after the good work I did during the altitude training camp with the team on Teide and then on the last week I spent training in Val Senales. I feel good and now I can check my preparation so far with a race, seen that my last appearance was at the Tirreno-Adriatico and above all there will be many strong rivals, that I will challenge at Giro too. Moreover we can focus on the team work with the teammates that will be with me on May as well”. Among them, there will be Giovanni Visconti too: “I will be at the Tour of the Alps for refining the great work I did during the last month on my home roads with many endurance training to have the good basis for the Liège and the Giro. After the Catalunya we agreed with the team to not ride the Itzulia to be physically fresh for the Giro and it turned out to be the right choice, seen that I had a mild fever just after I came back from Spain. At the Tour of the Alps I hope to support as best I can our captain Pozzovivo and to fight for a win in a couple of stages that suit me, in particular in the final day on the route of the Innsbruck World Championships. I hope that I will end this race with the good condition for riding both a great Liège and Giro”.
