Dubai Tour – ST3 Dubai-Al Alqah :: 3rd place for Sonny
Dubai, 2nd February – Dubai Silicon Oasis Stage 3 – This was the Longest Stage and seams as well the hardest due to the wind conditions. It is also the stage where Sonny did what he planned to do already for two Stages.
Stage 3 started at 10.50 in Dubai Marina on the Persian Gulf and after 200km finished in the Al Aqah on the Indian Ocean in the Gulf of Oman. Riders passed four different Emirates (Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah). The route runs across the entire stretch of desert where the crossed wind was very strong and there were parts where you couldn’t see the asphalt.
At 21km a group of 4 made escape, including our Luka Pibernik. At 50km the gap was 5:30min. At 79km under heavy cross wind the peloton split in 4 parts, with first part being 20 riders including Sonny Colbrelli, David Per and Grega Bole. But eventually before Fujairah they all joined back together apart for the initial break of 4. At 3km to go the bunch absorbed “the fugitives”.
Entering crowded finish line in tourist city of Al Aqah the voice of the commentator shouted BAHRAIN MERIDA with Sonny Colbrelli in the 3rd place.
Sports Director Alberto Volpi was satisfied after the race and he explained: “The Stage was complicated due the very strong wind. I am happy for the team work in the first part, Pibernik was perfect taking a break away – a long one, it is being not an easy day for all riders. Colbrelli had a great support from the team-mates in the final of this complicated stage. I am happy for team work and the final result.”
Sonny’s words after the race:” I am very very happy. The team was very strong today and this is a very important race. I am ready for tomorrow’s new Stage.”
Luka Pibernik said after the race when he was quite a long time part of leaders group said: “Well, I tried my opportunity, unfortunately other riders caught us 3km before the finish line. I hope for the better next break-away and I will attack further on. But I am satisfied for the team work, finally we made it as a team and Sonny succeeded in the sprint.”
