2nd place for Matej Mohorič at Queen Stage at Tour of Germany
Trier, Friday 24th August – Today’s 196 km long Queen stage started in Bonn and finished in the oldest city in Germany in Trier. Riders had 2 intermediate sprints and 4 climbs plus the bonification point what made today’s the race even more interesting. The race was decided by tough finish sprint between Matej Mohorič and his competitor Maximilian Schachmann (Quick-Step Floors). Young German rider latched onto an attack from Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) at the top of the last climb. The gap in last few kilometers to go was never so big. Behind the two leaders in the last descent was also our rider Matej Mohorič who made a contact as they reached last kilometer. At the finish, Nils Politt (Team Katusha – Alpecin) was overhauled by Mohorič and Schachmann and they came together at the finish line, but Schachmann beat Matej by less than a wheel’s lenght.
Matej Mohorič commented the race: »In the last kilometer we played a little game. Nobody wanted to pull and Politt (Team Katusha – Alpecin) came from the behind. Schachmann (Quick-Step Floors) took his weel. Unfortunately, I was not able to pass him at the finish line. I took 2nd on the stage. I was a bit tired from the attack, I did 30k to go with the other guys. So, I couldn’t follow in the last climb but I made a crossing over the top in the descent. 2nd place is not bad but I regret not be able to win today.«
